Garden Petal

Hello, my quilting friends,

Starching

On this sunny and breezy day, I starched all the fabric for the Garden Petal and hung it on the clothesline.

Meanwhile, I brought the ironing board to the gazebo to press the fabric when the fabric dried.

All the fabric starched, pressed, and ready. I selected a variations of light blue, green, yellow, and pink for the Garden Petal.

The white is for the background and the light green for sashing and first inner border, and butterflies for outer border.

Pattern

The Garden Petal by Riley Blake Design is perfect for a scrappy quilt. I downloaded the free PDF pattern and colored the twenty Churn Dash blocks with the EQ8, selecting the fabric of my choosing.

The sashing and cornerstones separated the blocks, and two borders were added.

One of my mother's first blocks she used in her quilt was the Churn Dash block, and I'll be making this one in remembrance of the lovely quilts she gave to our children.

Garden Petal

All the pieces were stored in a clear plastic organize bin with its project's number reference. This was great preparing these two projects ahead of time before we travel next month.

A Fresh Start

Hello, my quilting friends,

What have you done to keep cool during those long, warm, and humid summer days? I filled our broken hot tub with water and soaked myself in; even if the jets weren't working, it was refreshing. Yes, there are a ton of accessible beaches in New Brunswick, but I cannot stay that long under the hot, intense heat during the mid-afternoon. Then I went into my long chair in our gazebo and read a novel while the birds sang. It's peaceful and dreamy, and I thank God for this moment of reprieve. Life is hard, so when I have a beautiful and serene moment, I savor it thoroughly.

We're celebrating our thirty-three anniversary this Saturday, but we have known each other for forty-nine. Those years count, too:) We are not doing anything special. My husband has bought thick steak and tiger prongs; we may get a few lobsters. And I am okay staying home for a great dinner with the man I love.

Completed

After I completed the Kona Cotton SAL 2024, I sewed all the blocks, I noticed three blocks that blended in value and colour fabric in the same area of the quilt. I followed the pattern's placement and took a picture on my design wall before sewing the blocks, but I only realized this issue that bothered  my quilter's critical appraisal to the core. After much debate with myself,  the main question arose: "Am I going to leave it or rearrange a few blocks."

The two left-bottom blocks (brown & blue) were shifted around

The three blueish blocks needed to be separated, and I couldn't ignore them, so I ripped off one blue block and exchanged it for another. I took my courage—wait...wait- not my courage, but my best friend, the seam ripper, fixed it. I was extremely pleased with the final result.

Another lesson learned with this pattern was to rely on something other than the pattern's placement for your block. Make sure you see all the blocks' placement on your design wall. The cutting table hides part of the design wall, so I didn't see the entire top until I laid it down on the floor.

Cleanup Schedule

Many SAQs were completed before the time allowed for them, and I added the recent SAQs to the list, so I needed to redo the schedule. I was happy about the pace I set myself for piecing blocks of different patterns and designers that challenged my skill with the seam allowance, squaring, using the Slotted Trimmer ruler, and understanding the value of fabric. My constant learning of new ways of quilting created a spree to sew more difficult quilt patterns.

The original schedule from July- November

The rectified schedule for July-December

Now, am I going to stay on track? We shall see:)

Fat Quarter

Usually cut the smaller pieces of fabric in squares from: 2 1/2" -6".  Some of those precut squares aren't use much. There are many ways to cut your scraps, smaller pieces, or FQ. When I watched how Lori Holt precut her Fat Quarters into strips, I knew that would work best for my needs.

Because she did an excellent job at explaining and also provided a tutorial, I won't go into detail, but urge you to check it out. And New Quilters website has 12 ways to cut your FQ into pieces. The bin are all set for those next precut or strips.

Summer Joy:Quilting~Swimming~ Travelling

Stacking Up

Now that I've finished five tops( Blockhead 5, Shine Together, Black Tie Affair, Analogous Charms, and Block Challenge 2024 by A Quilt Life),  I'll prepare a few projects ahead by selecting the fabric for each pattern, starching all the fabric before pressing it, and store everything into a bin. Preparation for another quilt is a delightful process that I enjoy immensely. But the part I disliked the most about quilting was when I had to spend money on fabric for the background or backing. I've always looked for sales at quilt stores to reduce the cost and even started purchasing good cotton fabric at the Thrift store. I rarely bought new arrivals or novelty fabrics at their total value, which is crazy and ranges between $24 and $ 30/ meter. That is ridiculous.

In Progress

I'm currently working on the Kona Cotton BOF 2024 blocks, which are all done now. Only the border and rows have to be sewn together now. The Analogous, a secondary scrappy quilt, was completed while working on the Kona Cotton blocks.

Analogous Charm-Scappy Quilt

In Preparation

The Vintage Sunburst Quilt pieces are all starched, pressed, cut into pieces, and ready to sew. After I watched how Kimberly from Fat Quarter Shop pieced the paper pieces of the Sunburst together with tips on piecing and pressing, I was glad to see her helpful tutorial on the vintage Sunburst assembly.

The Garden Petals by Riley Blake Design is an easy pattern, and I'll use fabric from my stash except for the backing and border. This month, hmm...maybe not. I'll try to precut all the pieces so I can sew the half-square triangles while working on the Barn Star blocks.

WHAT'S NEWISH

Scrappy Quilts
I'm always looking for a way to use my smaller pieces of fabric or precuts to make another scrappy quilt. Looking through my books, I found A Scrappy Quilt that fit a Queen and challenged myself to make every quilt from that book. Achieving this goal may take a few years, but that is fine with me.

Paper Piecing
Also, in 2019 I bought GEMOLOGY on paper piecing, and I didn't have the courage to get it started because I thought the blocks were 6". When I pulled the book out once again and read the instructions. Yes, I read the instructions first! Amazing. Anyway, I find out that there are four size block available: 6",8", 18", and "24". I set myself to make the 18" blocks and one block a month.

Quilt as You GoAfter watching many tutorials by Monica Poole, who demonstrated a few different ways to make a quilt as you go, I wanted to buy her book, of course. It wasn't available on Amazon, so I opted for this Quilt as You Go by Jera Brandvig. The book has good-quality pictures and instructions, but the method I sought, quilt as you go without sashing, wasn't mentioned in her book.

Buffet of Quilt Pattern

When you go to a restaurant with a buffet, do you tend to pack your plate with food stacked like a mini pyramid? We rarely go out for dinner, but I was thinking about the stack of projects I want to make that have already filled my 16 bins.  Am I chewing on more projects than I  can make? I don't mind if some of these projects take a few years. The vital matter is whatever brings joy and satisfaction while sewing in my little corner of happiness, my sewing room.

Keeping up brainstorming ideas is a way to become acquainted with new pattern layout and to improve your skills. Far my part, I'm enjoying the summer and slowing my pace doesn't bother me one bit.

Happy Summer!

Kona Cotton Solid: In Progress

 Hello my quilting friends,

I cannot believe it's already July! Where has June gone? As you know, I challenged myself with a few sew-along projects this year, at least five of which I started in January. So far, I have finished a few tops and added six more projects to the list, making it sixteen.

Sew at Your own Pace and be Happy!

According to the designer, sometimes the sew-along is set to take six to twelve months, but I decided to finish a few tops before the date proposed. Either the pattern needed to be adjusted to adjust the fabric's value for each block or I wouldn't say I liked the pattern's cutting instructions.
As I mentioned in my last posts, the fabric value brainstorming I went through for the Block of the Month 2024 by A Quilt Life was out of my comfort zone.

I created a schedule in December to keep track of all my projects. While summer was in full swing and I preferred to be outside than indoors, I wrote on another paper what I wanted to be done by the end of June with a specific goal. I did the same with July. Minimizing my goals for those two months helped me focus on my priorities.

Read the Pattern in it Entirety

Another brainstorming difficulty arose when I cut the pieces for the Kona Cotton solid BOF 2024. At first, I followed the cutting direction on the PDF pattern. So, I purchased this project's entire charm pack kit from Fat Quarter Shop. It cost me a lot more in Canadian dollars than I expected.
By the fourth block, it was evident that I wouldn't say I liked the direction for labelling each piece. Some background pieces were of different cut sizes but labelled with the same letter, and others were not even labelled at all.

Here is one example of the pattern labeling all the white background with the letter I which are of different size. The A/I corner of half-triangles, and the D/E/I are the flying geese.

The direction for the flying geese required that you cut squares diagonally and then the three triangles together on the bias, which stretched further after pressing them, instead of using the method of flipping a square over a rectangle. Some instructing pieces require a 5 1/4" square, definitely not the size of a charm, which is 5". Yep, I should have read the pattern's instructions BEFORE ordering the entire collection of the Kona Cotton Solid.

An example of square cut on the diagonal then sewed as three triangles to make a flying geese.

After that, I cut the remaining blocks using the well-known flying geese method and labelled each section with additional letters. The diagrams instructions are good. Okay, enough complaining for this quilt is to awesome!

Preparing

Preparing many blocks ahead is efficient and kept me busy during the warm and humid day that I can't stand any longer. Yep, the extreme of minus 20C we get her in New Brunswick. I still enjoyed our early walking and evening gardening, but the afternoon are dreadfully hot!

Half Triangle Trimmer

With so many haft-triangles to square, I decided to purchase a trimmer. There are many ruler for that purpose and after watching a quilting using this one, I opted in ordering it. Already using it so much!

Instead of trimming four sizes of the haft-triangle, I only had to set the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers, trim two sides, and voila!

Work in Progress

I'm using the secondary design wall, which is a picnic cloth from the Dollarstore.
Kona Cotton Solid 365 BOM 2024

One block left to sew and the border. This top will be done before the date set for and that is okay.

Pressing Mat

If you recall, I redid my two ironing boards with new fabric. The heat scorched the fabric quickly after pressing, leaving an ugly brownish stain. Also, the board got hot when I pressed many small pieces simultaneously.

I reluctantly purchased a wool ironing mat from Amazon, wondering if it was worth spending on another quilting tool. Amazingly, it works great. The wool pressing mat doesn't hold the heat long, and the wool material doesn't scorch after hours of usage.

What was missing under the fabric and batting? There is no fabric heat resistance. Why on earth didn't I think of that myself? Most stores sell their iron boards with fabric covers for lighter household purposes. As quilters, we drive those iron boards for hours!

Block Of the Month 2024

Challenge #1

Is this for me? A Quilting Life started the Block of the Month 2024 in January 2024. I decided to follow it, wanting to extend my skill with accuracy with piecing and squaring before sewing the section together.  I didn't anticipate the brainstorming that came with each block without seeing the pattern beforehand.  For this project, I used leftover Christmas fabric and added some others from another bundle, but the value of the fabric is what I struggled the most with. So, I drew each block on quadrille paper, and I colored each section to visualize the value of the light, medium, and dark fabric. It helps tremendously.

Challenge #2

Don't like surprises. There are fifty-five small Square-in-a-Square in this quilt which I didn't know until the reveal of the assembly of the top was given at the end.

Most of the square-in-square were chewed up by the seam allowance, even when I squared the block. The sashing was off a bit, too. Having put so much effort into piecing the block to have their points chewed up was disheartening.

I thought of ripping off every single one, but then I realized that the shashing was also off and not center. This has yet to happen often to me where cornerstones and sashing don't align with the rest of the blocks. After thinking about it, I admitted to myself the need to practice this square-in-square method and move on; otherwise, this top would have gone into a bin forever. As I write this block,  I'm thinking of fixing that square-in-a-square!

Challenge #3

Let it go. It's okay to admit we've limited ourselves in some piecing areas. Everyone has talent and skill when it comes to quilting. I've learned to avoid benchmarking or comparing myself to someone gifted in the skill area of quilting. But I love to discover an easier, faster, and more precise way of quilting.

For this reason, I've watched many YouTube tutorials to improve my skill with the square-in-a-square method. And I didn't even know there were many ways to do it. Yep, I may redo those nasty ones. We'll see:)

Challenge #4

Know your limits. For my part, I rarely participate in a mystery quilt or block of the month for good reason. Not seeing the entire final layout of the quilt isn't my forte. So why did I do it, you would ask? I wanted the challenge, and I got it! I have no regrets at all, for I've learned that some of my weaknesses in quilting need to be developed.

Challenge #5

Don't pull your hair; buy a bundle! Next time I embark on a mystery quilt or a sew-along, I will purchase a bundle of fat quarters that coordinate and leave the brainstorming for a pattern I can see. Doing so will ease my choice of value for each block, and I will enjoy the sewing process.

How about you? Have you learned a lesson or two while quilting this year? Let's go Quilt!

Blockhead 5: Top Completed

 Building Our Skills

When I started Blockhead 5 in January 2024, I had yet to learn that Moda Fabric began Group 1 in September 2023 with only nine blocks, while Group 2 had thirty blocks. Moda Fabric provides a free weekly pattern from a different designer to assemble and improve your piecing skills. I skipped the paper piecing and the applique pattern and sewed thirty blocks using the fabric from my stash.

Unfortunately, as this top progressed, I realized I lacked certain fabrics—some for the outer border, the sashings, and the cornerstones. Yeah, how that happens is simple. When I joined Blockhead 5, my first thought was to improve my piecing skills and not worry about fabric yardage. However, as I sewed each week, I made a quilt for my daughter, inserting four of her blocks from high school. Well, the quilt turned into a monster size!

I should have considered the improvisation I had to make while selecting fabrics for each block, as I did not know how it would look when completed. This part was a challenge, and I must admit there are a few things I dislike about the top, but that is how we learned quilters by building new skills.

No Regrets

I tested a few fabric for background for the shashing and opted for a purple Batik.

This giant quilt is 80" x 93.5". The blocks are 12", and there are thirty of them. This is what it looks like when you improvise without knowing the final result. What I would do differently next time is make sure I have yardage for the background, sashing, and a main theme for the fabric.

Final Result

Cats & Butterflies 2024

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the result of this quilt, but it turned beautiful top, and I'll probably quilt it next winter.

Have you ever followed a Mystery or sew-along without knowing the outcome until the designer revealed the assembling of all the blocks you pieced together? The mystery is NOT my favorite project on the top of my bucket list. Too often, I was not too fond of the result or the fabric I chose. But this year, I challenged myself to build my skills in all different sewing areas. Wow,  Blockhead 5 did it for me! If I had a bundle from a designer, that would be so much easier and fun!

Now, enough complaining, so let's prepare another quilt top.

Have a lovely summer!

Hen Party: Quilted

 Hello my quilting friends,

This top was quilted on the Janome Horizon 7700 with a simple stippling design on the hen's blocks and a free-motion flowers pattern and sun on the chick's blocks.

This quilt was entirely done with fabric from my stash. Even for the borders as you can see clearly they aren't of the same fabric.

Patterns

I find this pattern in the Quilt Mania Special Spring 2013, that was on a donation magazines pile at my local quilt store. This pattern was simple and perfect for a beginner quilter. Like me, if you find a pattern you like. Sew it!

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/48/dd/27/48dd275d8d093ba418880aecf50db019.jpg
I'm not sure if this book is still available, but you can still find the Hen Party Pattern by Button and Bees at Connecting Thread. See link below.

Backing & Binding

For the backing, I've used large pieces of fabric that I didn't care much for anymore. And for the binding a bright red-orange strip of fabric.

Quilting

For the firs chick block, I used a Leonis Water Erasable Markers for the emplacement of free-motion flower, sun, and grass. Did that for the first two blocks but after that, I winged it.

The hen's block were done with a free-motion stippling around the hens and feathers for the body. And last, I find little buttons for the eyes. The quilt hang in my guest room.

BLOCKHEAD 5: Preping & Sewing

 BLOCKHEAD GROUP 2 -Quilt #2

I spend six hours preparing 15 blocks in two days. Piecing those blocks took double the time as each ones were pieced differently. Most of these blocks are made of half-triangles and flying geese in their construction.

A cute little pile of ready to sew blocks

Drawing each block with coloring pencil on the provided sheet was useful for I didn't have to rethink the colour position during the construction of each block. Here is BlockHead 5 Group 1 & 2 patterns:https://www.modafabrics.com/blockheads5

BLACK TIE AFFAIR-Quilt #6

After choosing small pieces of fabrics in black and white or the 5" squares from my scrap bin, I divided them into three main groups of colour: blacks, whites, and everything in between. As I pieced the blocks from the Blockhead, I set a pile of 5" square from the Black Tie Affair under the table sewing machine. To avoid confusing myself by mixing, according to the diagram, from dark fabric from the bottom to the whites at the top, I clipped four 5" pieces together in a group of six for each row. And in no time, the whole top was completed while sewing many blocks from the BlockHead.

Not bad consider this quilt is made up of scraps. Again, this is not a kit. I'll link the pattern below. It was great being able to use those 5" scrappy squares and I've planned to make another one!

An Analogous Black Tie Affair ~ Quilt #12

The selection of those 5" square from my scraps bins.

I've used the Color Tool to identify this fabric colour which was hard to figure out and was a bit surprised that I find it on the Chartreuse page.

Then used the Chartreuse's backside to see my option for fabric combination. From the Chartreuse option with the light-chartreuse fabric, I choose the Analogous to use all the rest of those greens and oranges 5" squares.

This Color Tool is quite useful when most of your fabrics, like mine, are from different designers. After choosing the fabrics, I designed a mock pattern of the Black Tie Affair with EQ8 so that I could visualize the entire layout of fabrics, from dark greens at the bottom to the lighter tone at the top.

Therapeutic Sewing

Sewing is therapeutic in my life when there are situations I cannot control. My husband got a hernia surgery- which went well. My oldest son had a mental breakdown, and he isn't doing great. Also, our nine-year-old isn't may have an small intestine blockage. We've already spent $$ to have him checked by the vet. And the dog had a broken tooth at the same time. Poor dog.

But God is good and sees all this and cares. Already, He has answered our prayer by having my husband's surgery earlier when a cancellation presented itself. Praise Him!

Now, let's go quilt!

BLOCKHEAD 5: Keeping on Track

Keeping track of my monthly goals was challenging, even if I precut a few blocks on Saturdays and pieced them during the week. Other times, I needed more time for sewing, which put me behind on my overall planning. It's Okay.

Since January 2024, I have set a pace that will benefit from perfecting my piecing with more precision and pressing open the seams flat, giving them a sharp look. Also, even with my best efforts, many projects I may not be able to complete them this year. Working on more than one top per month is a new challenge, as I used to work on ONE quilt at a time. It's not dull.

Here is a good example how my week is when I worked on different projects.

Purchasing Fabric

I am always looking for sales, and I've to make sure the fabrics I buy are in a light tone and warm colour, for there is a lack of it from my stash.

Christmas Tree

I'm using the Janome 7700 with the walking foot to make long horizontal lines across the quilt.

Black Tie Affair

I precut all the squares in the white/black and black fabric. Most of the fabric is pieces left from previous projects or fabric purchased years ago.

Blockhead 5

For this project, I mainly used my stash and a bit of newer print. Each block takes about one hour, and it's no wonder I'm behind.

Patterns & Sewing

I couldn't pass up the patterns' discount at $3 a piece at Fabricville. I cannot wait to make a new dress with my new Juki serger.

Planning Sheets

I numbered each project with its name and check-marked them when done.

And just for fun, I recorded my block completion on this sheet.

Let's there be Light!

I asked my husband to remove those two ridiculous light bulbs sticking out and install a better lighting fixture that projects better lighting in the small sewing room. As you can see from the quilt on my design wall, I hung a light above my working station, but the rest of the room was dimmed in shadow. It's so much better now!

Another successful month completed with many...many...many more blocks to sew.

Let's Go Quilt!
